David founded David Shepard Associates, Inc. in 1976. Today the company consists of senior level consultants with expertise in direct marketing, quantitative methods, Internet marketing and database management technology. Since its inception the company has provided direct marketing and database consulting services to over one hundred direct marketing firms, advertising agencies, and Fortune 500 firms. Current major clients include Bertelsmann, Aegon, AOL, Radio Shack, CIBC and Doremus.

In 1988 the firm created the Next Month at Sotheby’s program, which in 1989 won the Post Office’s coveted Gold Mail Box Award for The Most Innovative Use of Direct Mail. In 1990 the firm introduced the Fast-Count DBMS an extraordinarily fast database management system that today manages some of the largest databases in the direct marketing field, including the 7 terabytes database at Aegon, which contains data on well over 100 million households, and supports all of Aegon’s name selection processes for its insurance business.

In 1999 Dow McGraw Hill published the third edition of The New Direct Marketing, the firm's major text on database marketing and statistical analysis, which has sold over 20,000 copies and is used in most graduate direct marketing programs.

David was Chairman of the DMA's Marketing Council, is a frequent featured speaker at industry conferences in the United States, Europe and Australia. In the US David conducts courses on statistical modeling and database marketing on behalf of the DMA. Over 5,000 direct marketers have attended his lectures and seminars. His column on Database Marketing appears in Direct Magazine. Prior to writing for Direct he wrote the database column for DM News.

In 1990 David was named General Chairman of Direct Marketing Day in New York. . In 1996 he received The Silver Apple Award from The New York Direct Marketing Club. In 1997 he received the New England Direct Marketing Association’s Award for Excellence in Direct Marketing. He is on the Advisory Boards of: The NYU Center for Direct Marketing and The Journal of Interactive Marketing, where he also serves as Editor/Practioneer. He was a member of the DMEF Executive Board, and was elected to the DMA Board of Directors in 2002. In 2000 David won the DMEF’s Ed Mayer Educational Leader of the Year award.

Prior to starting DSA David held senior management positions at Doubleday & Co., Throckmorton & Satin Associates, and The Maxwell Sroge Company. David is a graduate of CCNY and has an MBA from Columbia University
